Tesla Halloween Mode: a ghost on the screen and the scary cost of a car

On 22 October 2026 the Tesla centre screen showed a car under a white sheet. Two glowing eyes, a full moon, a haunted house, bare trees, gravestones and carved pumpkins. In the driving view the same ghost car moved among green-tinted traffic. The owner of CzymPojade photographed it in his own car. The published frames hide the driver name on the status bar, the navigation card with the street address, and the Bluetooth device name.

What software update 2026.38.3 added

Tesla shipped Halloween Mode in software update 2026.38.3 on 6 October 2026. The public copy of the official release notes, collected by Not a Tesla App, presents it as a year-round feature, not only a late-October gag. You can put a Ghost Costume on the car visualization. A separate Trick or Treat Mode plays spooky sounds and flickers the lights when visitors approach a parked car. The same note lists a scheduled light show and a photobooth.

Coverage of that update, also on Not a Tesla App, describes the screen. Ghost Costume drapes a glowing white sheet with eye holes over the on-screen car. In Park the backdrop becomes a graveyard: a full moon, a haunted house, withered trees, jack-o'-lanterns and a hand rising from the dirt. The theme carries into the drive: the sheet ripples, nearby cars glow green, pedestrians can appear as skeletons and traffic lights as pumpkins. That matches the 22 October photos: the parked graveyard scene and the green traffic in motion.

The notes limit the full set to Teslas with AMD infotainment. On Intel units, according to the same write-up, wraps and a lock sound remain, but not the parked scene or the photobooth extras. If Toybox has no Halloween tile yet, the car may still be waiting for a later rollout wave, or it may have an older computer.

How to turn it on

Halloween Mode lives in Toybox, next to Santa Mode. The tile repeats the release-note line about spreading holiday fear year round. There are two independent toggles: Ghost Costume and Trick or Treat. After you switch it on, the screen plays a short Happy Halloween intro over a full moon, and cabin lighting can turn orange.

Trick or Treat plays sounds through the exterior speaker and flickers the lights when someone approaches a parked car. Tesla disables Sentry Mode, the alarm and walk-away lock while that toggle is on. The mode turns itself off when you shift out of Park or enter Low Power Mode. The driving photos show only the ghost costume, because that toggle works on its own.

The exact tap path can differ between screen layouts, so we do not invent a menu that the notes omit. If update 2026.38.3 (or a later build from the same wave) is already installed, look for the Halloween Mode tile in Toybox and the two toggles.

The scary costs a sheet cannot hide

A ghost costume on the display does not change the electricity bill, insurance, servicing or depreciation. Those lines stay, whether the visualization shows a normal car or a sheet with eyes. Halloween Mode is a free software extra, not a new TCO line.

The unnerving part is usually the missing numbers. A configurator price says little about several years of ownership at your mileage, tariff and financing. CzymPojade calculates total cost of ownership with the same engine, without guessing after an API failure and without rewriting the result in the browser.

If the pumpkins and green traffic leave one useful question, it is what the car actually costs. That answer lives in the TCO calculator. Enter mileage, years and how you use the car. The ghost on the screen is seasonal. The costs stay all year.
